This year in History we have been using Story of The World, vol. 4: The Modern Age. It’s a classroom reading resource for our Biblioplan program. I also bought the Story of the World, vol. 4 activity book.
We are currently studying World War II. In chapter 29, we read how the Germans planned to invade Great Britain with air raids in major cities. Parents, who feared for their children’s safety, often sent their children to live with friends or relatives for a few months.
In the activity book we answered the review questions and did my version of a role-playing activity. The girls were each told they were going to be sent away to live with family and they had to pack, in five minutes, a suitcase. After five minutes in their rooms thinking, they came back to the school room and drew what they would pack onto a suitcase-shaped paper I made for each of them. The book suggested packing an actual suitcase, which would be fun if I wanted to make them clean up afterwards. The way we did it, they have something to keep and something to show daddy when he gets home too.
C would pack: clothes, one of my dolls, my gameboy and a game to go with it, a phone, sunglasses (for those sunny days), one of my stuffed animals, and a first aid kit (who knew she had one of those in her room?)
B would pack: clothes, accessories (a girl has to look good while escaping, y’all), glasses and glasses cleaner, blanket, money, Gameboy and games, purse and CDs, both of my cats, bathing suit (apparently the girls think it will be tropical where they are going), MP3 player, socks and shoes.
The lists are fun to read and the girls will remember this activity for a long time. They are learning to love History and I love to spend time with them while we learn.
Oooh! I just found out Amazon sells The Story of the World on CD so the family can listen together. How cool is that?! It’s pretty reasonable too, considering your history usually cycles every four years.
Now, go have fun learning!

I saw your comment about AI @ BooMama’s, and I had to come check in with the Home School Mama — that’s my yahoo email address. Us homeschool mamas are a groovy bunch, that’s what I’ve decided.
PS: SOTW is our FAVORITE!!
